Dow jumps most in 5 weeks

More than 4 out of 5 S&P companies report profits that beat estimates

 

Dow Jones posted it’s biggest jump in 5 weeks. All three major US indices closed at record highs with corporate profits beating estimates.

 

Here’s what caught our eye among equities:

S&P 500 Index added 0.1% at the close in New York.

Dow Jones jumped 0.7%

Stoxx Europe 600 Index rose 0.3%.

FTSE 100 added 0.4%.

DAX sprung 0.4% to a record.

 

A fairly boring FX session safe for the yen:

The dollar was little changed.

The euro added 0.2% to $1.1794.

The pound climbed 0.1% to $1.3198.

The yen slumped 0.6% to 112.92 per dollar.

 

Oil gaining ground while haven gold slips away:

WTI gained 0.2% to $52 a barrel.

Gold fell 0.3% to $1,280.76 an ounce, a one-week low

Copper retreated for a second day, declining 0.6% to $3.175 a pound
